Course Overview
The Certified Professional Coder [CPC]-Medical Coding course gives an overview of medical coding and billing; this course gives the concept of medical coding and the knowledge a student requires to code. As such, it is ideal for students and individuals intending to pursue a career in health coding. During this course, the students shall be taught the principles of coding, regulatory guidelines, and practical skills that shall enable them to gain the required certification. Students will learn about ICD, CPT, and HCPCS coding systems in depth. Students will be prepared to take the CPC examination upon completion of their medical coding course and to successfully start their career.
Course Content
Module 1: Introduction to Medical Coding
The course introduction provides a background into medical coding, its importance in the healthcare industry, and the role that a medical coder continues to play. Then, different systems of coding are introduced, such as ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCS, along with an understanding of their respective applications in code writing and billing.
Module 2: Medical Terminology
Learn medical terminology, which is pertinent to proper coding. Learn basic anatomy, physiology, and the most common medical terms. Study the prefixes, suffixes, and root words in order to interpret the meaning of the medical language and improve your coding skills.
Module 3: ICD-10-CM Coding
Understand the coding of ICD-10-CM, including how to navigate the coding manual, assign diagnosis codes, understand coding guidelines, and practice coding realistic patient scenarios. Updates to and changes in coding are reviewed.
Module 4: CPT Coding
Describe Current Procedural Terminology coding. Explain the structure of the CPT manual; E&M codes, surgical codes, and diagnostic codes. Review code modifiers and complete exercises in coding procedures and services.
Module 5: HCPCS Coding
Understand HCPCS coding in both Level I and Level II code levels. Be able to code supplies, equipment, and services not categorized in CPT. Learn about HCPCS guidelines and practice coding some scenarios.
Module 6: Coding Guidelines and Compliance
Understand coding guidelines, regulations, and compliance standards. Understand the role of coding in healthcare compliance and fraud prevention. Understand payer-specific guidelines and the importance of accurate and ethical coding practices.
Module 7: Medical Billing and Reimbursement
Understand medical billing for claim submissions, methods of reimbursement, requirements from payers, the revenue cycle, documentation for billing, how to resolve issues in billing, and the importance of coding for proper reimbursement.
Module 8 Preparation for the CPC Exam
Targeted review and practice for the CPC certification exam: study exam content outlines, practice sample questions, and review key topics. Learn test-taking strategies and receive tips on how to pass the CPC exam.
Module 9: Hands-on Practice and Case Studies
Apply your knowledge through hands-on practice and case studies-work on coding exercises, real-world scenarios, and case studies that drive home coding skills. Practice in an emulated coding experience that translates into hands-on practice.
Module 10: Professional Development and Career Planning
Pursue career opportunities in medical coding and attain professional development. Learn to pursue a job, build an appropriate resume, and develop interviewing skills. Understand continuing education and professional growth and development requirements in the field.

Basic knowledge of medical terminology and anatomy recommended.
